Late one Saturday afternoon we decided to take a trip to Cedar Hill State Park, which is south of Dallas near Joe Pool Lake, and offers two sets of trails.  One trail system winds through the area near the campgrounds, and one is at the very southern tip of the park and is maintained by the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association (DORBA).  Continue reading →

Elm Fork Nature Preserve

Over the Labor Day weekend we decided to take a drive to the Elm Fork Nature Preserve in Carrollton, Texas.  The trailhead is actually nestled away inside the McInnish Sports Complex, but there are signs directing you right to where you need to go.  My expectations for these hiking trails were not very high, considering there is only about one mile of natural trails.  Unfortunately, the park lived up to my expectations.  Continue reading →

Recent Updates

I apologize for the lack of content updates, but I’ve been working to improve the site layout and design.  I hope you notice the improved comments, photo gallery, and links to share content through facebook, etc.  We did get a chance to go hiking at the Elm Fork Nature Preserve in Carrollton over the holiday weekend, so expect a new review soon.  Until then, please enjoy the photo galleries and trail lists, and keep checking back for new content.

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve

The Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is a great 200 acre park located at Midway and Parker Rd. in west Plano.  The park is managed by the City of Plano and offers natural hiking trails, mountain biking trails, and paved trails for walking or cycling.  The park has excellent amenities with lots of parking, nice restrooms, and three covered pavilions with picnic tables.  This is a very nice park for getting in a relaxing 2-3 mile hike after work. Updated List of Texas Trails

Palo Duro Canyon fog

Make sure to check out the new list of great hiking trails around Texas here.  This list will continue to evolve as other hiking trails are added.  We intend to take some weekend trips during the Fall, so soon there will be reviews included.  The Palo Duro Canyon is tops on our list to visit, so we should have a full review posted within the next month.  I’m not sure how my Texas history class never mentioned that we have the second largest canyon in the United States!

Cedar Ridge Preserve

For my first review I wanted to introduce you to the joys of Cedar Ridge Preserve, managed by the Audubon Society of Dallas.  This preserve is south of Dallas, near Joe Poole Lake, and is a true gem of nature.  I have read that it is a slice of the Hill Country in Dallas, but this statement does not do the park justice. Welcome to Dallas’ newest and most comprehensive site for natural trail hiking in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  I am a beginner hiker, that has decided to consolidate all the information I can about the D/FW region’s natural trails.  I have lived in this area for most of my life, and just recently discovered the wonderful and beautifully maintained trails that exist all around us, in relative anonimity.  My goal with this site is to provide a comprehensive listing of our trails, as well as entertaining and informative reviews of each trail.  I hope you find this information useful.
